This part of the year is always one of the most exciting times, at least when you’re into coffee cupping. The national selection rounds for each Cup of Excellence participating country are already behind us, and for some countries the top lots that made it to the national selection have also been passed in review by the international jury. That means the international auctions are approaching fast, which in turn means it’s time for us to do massive cuppings again and taste for ourselves which lots might interest some of our roaster friends. Tradition has it that we never agree with the Cup of Excellence ranking, preferring lots in the mid- or lower range over the top three or even top five. Which is actually just perfect, as those lots play in distant price ranges. Unless one of our roaster friends absolutely wants to commit to a certain lot. In that case, we know no limits.
In other words, these are exciting times because we get to cup the absolute top of the harvest of six Central American countries. Cupping dates are spread over June, with the exception of the Cup of Excellence Nicaragua program last Monday, as the auction will take place tomorrow already. The outcome of that cupping was, as expected, that our cupping panel consisting of some Antwerp roasters and a Western Flanders roaster preferred the coffees that made up the mid-section of the national top selection, with the exception of the lot that ranked 3d with a score of 89.73 by the international jury. We cupped the coffees in two rounds, with lot 19 by  Octavio Jose Peralta Paguaga – Farm Santa Maria de Lourdes being the favourite of the first round, and as said, lot 3 by Henry Alexander Marin (Farm: Fila Alta – Catuai) was elected as the best coffee from the second round.
